About the Item
Antique "Table Soleil" - height-adjustable drawing or architect's table
France
Walnut
End of 19th century.
Dimensions: H x W x D: 77 x 89 x 52 - height-adjustable up to 120 cm
Description:
Reading, drawing or work table standing on a four-sided recessed plinth.
The fluted column contains the table extension system devised and patented by Georges Gay. The system is unlocked using a lever on the side and can now be pulled up and locked in place almost infinitely.
The table top can also be tilted. The frames can then be folded up to serve as bookends.
It is also possible to adjust the tabletop to the side so that the furniture can be used comfortably while sitting on the armchair. The round recesses on the base allow the table to be positioned as close as possible to the armchair. The chair leg is therefore positioned in the recess. Iron counterweights are mounted underneath the base plate to ensure stability, even when the plate is moved sideways. This can be clearly seen in one of the photos.
The table top is veneered in a diagonal grain pattern with a mitre-cut edge all around.
When the table top is folded down, we see a plaque on which the inventor of the system, Georges Gay, and the manufacturer, Emile Chouanard, who sold the piece of furniture under the name Table "Soleil", are noted. All metal fittings are also stamped with "Georges Gay Paris”.
Chouanard ran his hardware shop "Aux Forges de Vulcain" in the Rue Saint Denis in Paris and offered this table under the heading "Mechanical Furniture" in his catalogues towards the end of the 19th century.
Condition:
Restored condition with a silky oiled surface. The system has been cleaned and works perfectly. When fully extended to the side, the top is not exactly horizontal, but leans slightly downwards on the outside. This can be clearly seen in the attached video.
