Late Regency Mahogany Writing Table

About the Item

A Fine Late Regency Mahogany Dressing or Writing Table in the Manner of Gillows of Lancaster. This fine table with its shaped superstructure and concave front was originally conceived as a dressing table but today such pieces are often used as writing tables in the modern home office. The use of contrasting boxwood stringing, the beautifully finished concave front and the particularly inventive shaping of the superstructure are all signs of very high quality design and, when coupled with the reeded legs which are known to have been used on many pieces by Gillows, it is highly likely that they were the makers of this fine piece of furniture. The finely chosen veneers and quality brassware, including fine original castors, are also typical of the firm's output. This fine table would grace any room in the modern home and is both attractive and practical.

    Located in Gloucestershire, GB
A Very Fine Late Regency Period Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase in the Manner of J. C. Loudon c.1825-30. Of fine and small size, this charming piece is in a restrained gothic style with arched astragal glazing bars to the upper bookcase doors and interesting panelled reserves to the secretaire drawer and the two cupboard doors below. Blind fretwork in the gothic taste also decorates the pilasters on the lower section which is further ornamented with a finely gadrooned edging and feet. The whole piece is veneered in finely selected mahogany of lovely figure which has achieved a very fine colour and patination and contrasts gloriously with the gilt metal handles on the secretaire drawer. The gilt brass central strip on the bookcase doors, both decorative and a way to keep out dust, is a very nice touch as well. The cupboard base features one traditional cupboard...
