Louis XVI Mahogany And Ormolu Mounted Bureau Plat By Martin Carlin

About the Item

This desk is by one of the finest makers in France during the fourth quarter of the 18th century under the reign of Louis XVI. Stamped M.CARLIN and JME on underside. Two commodes by Carlin with identical handles are illustrated in Le Mobilier Francais Du XVIII Siecle page 175. Pieces by this maker are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, Wallace Collection, Frick Museum, Getty Museum, Waddesdon Manor and the Detroit, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Cleveland Museums. Versailles and the Petit Trianon and the Louvre. With a rectangular top with chamfered corners and green leather writing surface with bronze edge over a conforming frieze containing two working drawers and two false drawers on the reverse side. Swag handles and key holes and surrounded by beaded bronze trim. Raised on circular tapered fluted legs headed by Ionic columns and ending on cast sabot.

A Fine Bureau Plat in the Manner of André-Charles Boulle Constructed in ebony with arabesque foliate cut brass inlays, with premiere-partie panels set with tortoiseshell grounds and brass inlay work, and having extensive fine quality ormolu mounts; rising from animal paw sabots, mounted with female masks at the shoulders; the apron housing three drawers, with faux drawers to the obverse, the central drawers set with a Bacchic mask issuing foliates, the platform of serpentine form, having a brass guard edge, and inset with a gilt tooled morocco leather.
