About the Item

Extraordinary Louis XV style bureau plat desk by Edward Holmes Baldock, with its petite portions will fit comfortably into small spaces. 18th century bureau plats or writing tables were also called library tables as they were often found in the home library where the gentleman of the house would keep his literature and do his business transactions. This exquisite desk with gilt banded serpentine-outlined gilt-tooled leather-lined leather writing surface above three horizontal frieze drawers in apron with foliate bronze trim; the reverse with three simulated drawers of conforming design, supported on four understated cabriole legs mounted with foliate bronze trim continuing to chutes terminating in foliate cast sabots. Beneath the desk it is heavily branded with initials EHB for Edward Holmes Baldock. Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845), prominent London furniture dealer, restorer and producer. He specialized in repairing, remodeling, and adapting 18th century French furniture. This desk is heavily branded EHB underneath, it most likely was not made by him but just passed through his London shop. * J. Paul Getty Museum Journal Volume 4 1997 p 34 Rococo design dominated interiors and furniture during Louis XV’s reign in the 18th century with sensuous organic curves, assymetry and elaborate ornamentation with an aura of fantasy, luxury and elegance, while being intimate and comfortable at the same time. Art and design was influenced greatly by the king's chief mistress Madame Pompadour, a patron of the arts was behind the funding of the porcelain company Sévres. This glamorous design adds contrasting highlights to modern and contemporary interior settings.

A Victorian walnut marquetry writing table attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock, the shaped rectangular top with an oval panel inset with tooled green leather, the frieze with two small side drawers, all raised on solid baluster end supports joined by a spiral-turned stretcher, decorated with bone, stained and exotic woods with naturalistic flowers and boxwood stringing.
