About the Item
A gorgeously designed Scandinavian writing desk and chair set by the celebrated designer Simo Heikkila. Created in the 1990s, this set is a deliberate and masterful homage to the iconic work of Dutch "De Stijl" founder and luminary Gerrit Rietveld.
The Rietveld influence is brilliantly showcased in the desk’s functional design. Its slatted door front drops down to become a writing surface, gracefully supported by a leather rope. The desk’s blonde wood frame is offset by attractively contrasting red lacquered details, a direct nod to Rietveld’s signature color palette. The companion chair has a lacquered red wood frame complemented by off-white upholstered cushions.
The set is in original condition with some visible wear consistent with its age and use.
Desk measures: 34.375" x 17"/30" x 43".
Chair measures: 20.25" x 22.5" x 17.75"/25.75"/35.75".
More to the story...
The work of Finnish designer Simo Heikkila holds a significant place in late 20th-century Scandinavian design. A master of wood and a proponent of a "less is more" philosophy, Heikkila's career was built on a deep respect for materials and a focus on honest, functional forms. After working in his family's furniture factory, he went on to become a distinguished professor of furniture design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, where he shaped a new generation of designers. His work is featured in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and he is a recipient of the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award.
