Swedish Karl Johan Salon/Sofa Table or Desk in West Indies Mahogany, c. 1825

About the Item

An exceptionally fine Karl Johan salon table, sofa table or desk in beautiful West Indies mahogany. The top has two leaves that drop down on each side with two drawers along the apron, and is supported by a center pedestal composed of a concave beveled column that tapers up and rests on a quatre-form base with saber legs & carved lion's paw feet on casters. Classical motifs embellish the base & include carved acanthus leaves & palmettes. Features expert book-matching of the crotch-mahogany grain throughout the top and along the apron & fascia of the two drawers adding to the dramatic effect of this exquisitely crafted table. This salon table is of the highest quality and would have been made by one of the finest cabinet makers in an urban center such as Stockholm. Additionally, the secondary wood is mahogany, and the carvings are superb. The dovetails on the drawers are especially fine and the mahogany chosen is the best West Indies mahogany of the period.
