About the Item

Make-up table and desk as transformable furniture England Mahogany early 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 80 x 120 x 75 cm Description: Extremely rare and refined multifunctional piece of furniture made of solid mahogany. Partnerdesk standing on turned legs with dominant fluting typical of the period and region. The legs end at the bottom in brass sabots mounted on castors so that the furniture can be easily moved around the room depending on how it is used. Partnerdesk because the piece of furniture can be used from both sides. This is ensured by the continuous knee hole on the one hand and the storage compartments on both sides on the other. The main side with ivory handles has four drawers of different sizes, one of which has an optically two-part front; the partner side with dark ebony handles has a wide drawer in the centre, a drawer-style door on the right and a blind front on the left with a hinged compartment behind it that can be opened from the side. The two side sections of the top panel can be folded outwards to reveal a storage compartment lined with white marble underneath. The centre panel elements can be set upright and locked at different angles of inclination with the aid of a toothed rail system. This creates two writing and reading desks, one of which can be moved forwards to create more legroom. It is particularly nice that one of the original bookends with adjustable brass holders is still present. When fully extended, the reading desk at the front can be folded down even further and, with its mirror mounted on the inside, transforms the piece of furniture into a dressing table. This also explains the two marble tops, which were perfect for storing make-up and powder compacts. The mirror with its slight fading is absolutely authentic and is certainly original to the time the furniture was made. The table meets the highest standards of craftsmanship of the time. Please take a look not only at the finely dovetailed corner joints of the drawers, but also at the precisely fitted hinges of the flaps that run across the corners. The choice of excellent materials suggests a demanding client - such qualities were already associated with considerable costs at the time the piece of furniture was created. Its special function suggests that it is a unique piece made exactly according to the customer's wishes. Condition: Very good, restored condition. All moving parts work perfectly.
