Victorian Gilt-Bronze and Jasper-Ware Mounted Writing Table, circa 1860

About the Item

A Victorian gilt-bronze and Jasper-Ware mounted writing table. English, circa 1860. This fine bureau plat or side table has a leather top with a Greek key gilt border above a shaped apron to the front mounted with Wedgwood style jasper-ware roundels. There is a drawer to each end mounted with rectangular jasper-ware panels and the reverse of the desk left plain and veneered. The table is raised on cabriole legs terminating in castors. This elegant gilt-bronze and Jasper-Ware mounted writing table has two side panels and three central plaques depicting putti at play. Two plaques illustrate Cupid, who is identifiable by his bow and quiver of arrows (loading his bow with an arrow in the left plaque as he stands upon three steps, and stringing his bow in the right plaque). Between these two compositions is depicted Erato, the muse of lyrical and love poetry, playing a lyre accompanied by Eros. Each side panel represents a parade of putti enjoying leisurely pursuits: one side with an allegory of the hunt, and the other the liberal arts. The hunting party depicts eleven putti with the accoutrements of the hunt: from the left, one plays a lyre as two others take notes; three carry the head of a boar; two carry the head of a stag accompanied by a hound; and three at the front of the procession carry a spear and trumpets, accompanied by a hound and bird of prey. The other panel illustrates another eleven putti with various objects associated with leisure and the liberal arts. From left to right: two figures play musical instruments (a lyre and a trumpet); three consider an astrological globe; three engage in painting a sculptural bust; and two dance as a third plays a viola.

A fine Louis XVI Style gilt bronze and Pietre Dure mounted ebonised writing table, retailed by Edwards & Roberts. French, circa 1870. The drawer edge stamped 'Edwards & Roberts'. This Fine ebonised writing table has a three-quarter galleried superstructure with cavetto moulding above three cupboards, each with a panel door inset with Fine pietre dure panels of vases issuing flowers. The lower part of the table has a pullout / pull-out writing slide with a dark blue leather writing surface, above a long drawer centred by a tablet mounted with a foliate pietre dure panel. The table is raised on tapering square section legs united by an 'X'-frame stretcher centred by a gilt bronze vase. The beautiful Florentine pietre dure panels are inlaid in high relief with shaded agates marble, and semi-precious stones. The combination of Fine gilt bronze mounts on an ebonised ground enriched with Fine pietre dure inlay indicates the work of one of the best Parisian ébénistes of the period. Edwards & Roberts, was one of the principal London companies working in the nineteenth century in the taste of the late Eighteenth Century. They started business in 1845 and by 1854 were trading as 'Edwards & Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture'. Wardour Street became an important furniture retailing area in the second half of the 19th century. Contemporary documents note '... a fine and complete library...
