About the Item
Antiques of London
This is a fine Victorian rosewood Davenport desk dating from the mid to late 19th century, a compact and elegant writing desk designed for both practicality and display. The sloped top retains its original, tooled red leather writing surface, showing signs of age and wear consistent with use, adding to its period charm. The desk features a raised gallery back with a small shelf and beautifully executed inlaid decoration in the central panel.
The hinged writing slope opens to reveal additional storage compartments, including a fitted interior with small divisions for stationery and writing implements. Below the slope, a frieze drawer provides further storage space. The desk is supported on slender square tapering legs with a united cross-stretcher, all standing on original brass castors for ease of movement.
The hardwood is richly grained, and the fine craftsmanship is evident in the decorative inlay and overall proportions. Condition is good for its age, with expected wear to the leather top, some surface marks to the wood, and a lovely aged patina that enhances its antique character.
