About the Item

This rare writing table was designed by Nico van der Laan for the Pauluskerk in Dongen, constructed between 1965 and 1967. Conceived as part of a fully integrated interior, the table exemplifies the austere yet humane principles of the Bossche School. Executed in pine wood with a distinctive green lacquer finish, it features copper nail detailing and hand-cut side openings for lifting. The surface bears a layered patina acquired through decades of ecclesiastical use, reinforcing its authenticity and architectural presence. The table stands as a direct material expression of proportion, order, and restraint. Nico van der Laan designed all furniture for the Pauluskerk to ensure complete unity between architecture and interior, working under the direction of his brother, Dom Hans van der Laan. Closely aligned with the theoretical framework of the Plastic Number, Nico translated abstract proportional systems into tangible, functional objects. His furniture designs are inseparable from the spaces they inhabit, emphasizing harmony, rhythm, and permanence. Through this approach, he played a crucial role in realizing one of the most coherent Bossche School interiors ever created.
