About the Item

This is a rare opportunity to own an antique early Victorian, flame mahogany dining or conference room table, circa 1850 in date with a set of sixteen vintage Regency style dining chairs. This table can seat fourteen people in grand comfort and accomodate sixteen easily and eighteen when required. It has four original leaves which can be added or removed when necessary by a special winding mechanism. The leaves can be easily removed and stored away. The five turned legs have been beautifully hand carved and terminate in their original brass and porcelain castors. The central leg is for added stability when it is fully extended. This table was made from solid mahogany by a master craftsman, and should last for generations more. Take a look at the amazing and brilliant system of runners that wind out as you extend the table to support the leaves. The set of sixteen solid mahogany Regency style chairs comprises twelve side chairs and two armchairs. They have been polished and the drop in seats beautifully upholstered with a very attractive fabric and are ready to grace your dining room. Dimensions in cm: Height 73 x Width 166 x Depth 150 - When closed Height 73 x Width 358 x Depth 150 - When fully extended Height 85 x Width 50 x Depth 43 - Chairs Height 85 x Width 48 x Depth 43 - Armchairs Dimensions in inches: Height 28.7 x Width 65.4 x Depth 59.1 - When closed Height 28.7 x Width 140.9 x Depth 59.1 - When fully extended Height 33.5 x Width 19.7 x Depth 16.9 - Chairs Height 33.5 x Width 18.9 x Depth 16.9 - Armchairs Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Winding Mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works.

You are viewing the table in its excellent original condition as we have not yet had time to restore it. Any restoration that is required will be done before delivery and is included in the price. This table will look even more stunning once we have cleaned and French polished the top to bring out the wonderful flame figuring of the mahogany. The chairs have been polished and upholstered and are therefore in excellent condition.
