This is a rare opportunity to own an antique Edwardian oval extending dining table, made of flame mahogany and the matching set of eight antique Edwardian shield back dining chairs. The table has two leaves which can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion by a special winding mechanism. It has four elegant square and tapering legs that terminate in spade feet with their original brass and porcelain castors, it was made by a master craftsman and should last for generations more. The table is in superb condition and we have French polished it to revive it and bring out the beautiful grain of the flame mahogany. With elegant simple lines, this table epitomizes the ethos of the Edwardian style. The fantastic antique matching set of eight mahogany and boxwood inlaid Hepplewhite style dining chairs are circa 1900 in date. Comprising six singles and two carvers, with pierced back supports centered by inlaid shell paterae, with red leatherette drop-in seats above serpentine shaped seat rails, and raised on square tapering legs with elegant spade feet. These dining set has been masterfully crafted in beautiful solid mahogany throughout and the finish and attention to detail on display are truly breathtaking. Flame mahogany: Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed.” Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Winding mechanism for extending tables: A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works. George Hepplewhite (1727 - 1786) was a cabinetmaker. He is regarded as having been one of the "big three" English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale. There are no pieces of furniture made by Hepplewhite or his firm known to exist but he gave his name to a distinctive style of light, elegant furniture that was fashionable between circa 1775-1800 and reproductions of his designs continued through the following centuries. After he died in 1786, the business was continued by his widow, Alice. In 1788 she published a book with about 300 of his designs, The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide, with two further editions published in 1789 and 1790. Hepplewhite produced designs that were slender, more curvilinear in shape and well balanced. There are some characteristics that hint at a Hepplewhite design, such as shorter more curved chair arms, straight legs, shield-shape chair backs, all without carving. The design would receive ornamentation from paint and inlays used on the piece. Edwardian period (1900-1910): The Edwardian era saw the beginning of a new century with a new king and a new style of interior design. The heavy, dark, cluttered look of the Victorian era was gone, and in its place, something much lighter and more cheerful. Some of the most famous designer for this era include: Thomas Sheraton - Furniture. Louis Comfort Tiffany- Lighting. René Lalique- Glassware. Edwardian style: This early 20th century style had an eclectic feel to it, and drew from elements of Georgian, Medieval and Tudor style. Light, airy, and simplicity of details were key principles of this era. Edwardian furniture: Bamboo and wicker was the material of preference in Edwardian times. This added to the already delicate and breezy nature of the style. Other furniture was reproductions, drawing influence from Baroque, Rococo and Empire style. The wing chair is a Classic shape, and upholstery favored chintz and damask in pale colors. Edwardian color: Shifting away from the darkness of the Victorian interior, colors were fresh and light, with an informal feel. Patterns were feminine, with flowers and floral designs being highly favored. Colors were predominantly pastels: blue, lilacs, greens, yellows and grays. The floral theme was complemented by the liberal use of fresh flower arrangements. Living rooms often took darker colors such as dark green for fabrics, complemented with cream walls.
