Antique Regency Revival Dining Table & 12 Chairs 19th C

About the Item

This is a fabulous antique 19th Century dining suite comprising a Regency Revival dining table, Circa 1920 in date and a set of twelve antique Hepplewhite dining chairs C 1880 in date. The oval table been hand-crafted from flame mahogany with crossbanded decoration, and has two original leaves. The two leaves can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion and it is raised on four turned columns on a four splay legged base, that terminate in their original brass castors which makes it easy to move when required. The fantastic antique English made set of twelve mahogany shield back dining chairs are of "Hepplewhite" design and circa 1880 in date. The set comprising a pair of open armchairs and ten side chairs each with a pierced shield back above stuff over seats and raised on square tapering supports. The seat cushions have been upholstered in an elegant beige fabric with red diamond decoration. The chairs have been masterfully crafted in beautiful solid mahogany throughout and the finish and attention to detail on display are truly breathtaking. This stunning set will stand out in your dining room and will definitely become a key piece in your furnishing collection. THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THESE ITEMS ARE MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION. Dimensions in cm: Height 76 x Width 315 x Depth 137 - Fully Extended Height 76 x Width 195 x Depth 137 - With both leaves removed Height 95 x Width 55 x Depth 51 - Chairs Height 95 x Width 64 x Depth 51 - Armchairs Dimensions in inches: Height 2 foot, 6 inches x Width 10 foot, 4 inches x Depth 4 foot, 6 inches - Fully Extended Height 2 foot, 6 inches x Width 6 foot, 5 inches x Depth 4 foot, 6 inches - With both leaves removed Height 3 feet, 1 inch x Width 1 foot, 10 inches x Depth 1 foot, 8 inches - Chairs Height 3 feet, 1 inch x Width 2 feet, 1 inch x Depth 1 foot, 8 inches - Armchairs Flame Mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Winding Mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works.
