About the Item

This is an superb and rare antique Victorian solid walnut Boardroom/ Conference Table with the original set of sixteen chairs, circa 1850. It bears the impressed mark of the renowned maker Thomas Turner of Manchester. The table and chairs have been made from hand carved solid walnut and the table top has been expertly relined with a pair of green hand dyed Scottish hide insets. It has eighteen frieze drawers with solid mahogany linings, each with brass lock and key, and it is raised on six beautifully turned and carved bulbous and fluted legs terminating in brass castors. The fabulous matching set of sixteen antique Victorian solid walnut chairs have elegant carved top rails and fluted stiles above overstuffed seats and are raised on turned baluster supports joined by an H stretcher. They have been expertly reupholstered in top quality Scottish cow hide which has been hand dyed and antiqued to match gr een leather lined table top. The brass studding was achieved with close individual studs not by using strips, and each stud was individually hammered in by hand. It is a fabulous set which would look very grand in any board room. Condition: This boardroom set is in really excellent condition having been beautifully restored relined and reupholstered in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 79 x Width 488 x Depth 154 - When closed Height 108 x Width 51 x Depth 58 - Chair Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 7 inches x Width 16 feet, 0 inches x Depth 5 feet, 1 inch - When closed Height 3 feet, 6 inches x Width 1 foot, 8 inches x Depth 1 foot, 11 inches - Chair Thomas Turner was a 19th Century master cabinet maker based in Manchester. He also manufactured the modular bookcase system in London and Manchester as the renowned "Globe-Wernecke" Company Limited. The brand was, through an active export policy, global, and his bookcases certainly enriched the lives of Empire Administrators and scholars the world over The Walnut woods are probably the most recognisable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable.
