About the Item

This is a fantastic dining set comprising an antique Victorian solid mahogany D-end dining table with a set of fourteen antique upholstered back dining chairs, all circa 1870 in date. The beautiful table is in stunning flame mahogany and has four leaves of approximately 50 cm each, which can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion. It stands on four elegantly carved and turned legs that terminate in elegant brass and porcelain castors. The superb and rare set of fourteen antique Victorian mahogany dining chairs, with upholstered padded backs and stuff over seats are raised on elegant turned forelegs that terminate in brass and porcelain castors with sabre rear legs. They have been reupholstered in a sumptuous Cardinal red damask with expertly double piped borders. It is rare to find such a large, fabulous and comfortable set of chairs and they enhance this table beautifully. It is a very impressive dining set which is sure to contribute to successful dinner parties. Condition: In excellent condition the table having been beautifully restored and the chairs polished and upholstered in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in inches: Height 29.1 x width 140.2 x depth 52.0 - When fully extended Height 29.1 x width 60.6 x depth 52.0 - With all leaves removed Height 34.6 x width 18.9 x depth 22.8 - Chairs Height 18.9 - Seat height. Flame mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany.". The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
