Antique Walnut Jupe Action Dining Table by Gillows & 8 Chairs Late 19th Century

About the Item

This is a important and rare Queen Anne revival walnut jupe action dining table by Gillows, with eight cabriole dining chairs, all dating from the late 19th century. The amazing table features a shaped circular crossbanded top with a moulded edge, the six triangular segments rotating and expanding to accomodate two sizes of leaves. This means that the table can be set to three different sizes as required to suit the occasion. The shaped top and frieze is raised on shell-carved cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The table is stamped Gillows twice and bears the serial no. 96643. The two sizes of white metal capped set of six large leaf inserts, and six small leaf inserts come complete with a leaf carrier chest . The table seats four with all leaves removed, six with the small inserts and eight with the large inserts. This fascinating table illustrates all the very best elements of English cabinet-making combined with the remarkable burst of inventiveness of the Industrial Revolution. It was not until John Johnstone and Robert Jupe patented their ingenious design in March 1835 for an expanding round table,that round dining tables, which had suffered from the problem of not offering flexibility of seating, could compete with the established rectangular extending dining tables. The beautiful antique set of eight Louis Revival dining chairs, also date from the late 19th Century. This set consists of eight side chairs all skillfully carved from solid mahogany and beautifully reupholstered in gold damask. They have been expertly carved with shaped upholstered backs, overstuffed seats, and are raised on beautiful cabriole legs. Provenance: Bishton Hall, Country House sitting in 25 acres of beautiful gardens in the centre of rustic Staffordshire and home of the Northcote family. The original Jupe expanding table includes a tabletop that is divided into a number of sections. Each section is connected to an underlying frame structure, such that when the tabletop is rotated, the sections move radially outward, increasing the effective size of the tabletop. Once the tabletop has been rotated to move the tabletop sections outward, leaves are inserted between the sections, so as to fill in the spaces created by the outward movement of the sections. Because the tabletop sections diverge and move radially outward from a central point, the Jupe tabletop retains its shape in its expanded configuration. The Jupe table has now become one of the most valuable and sought after antiques. Original Jupe tables in good condition may sell for up to $350,000 at the time of writing. However, despite its popularity, the Jupe table has been very difficult to mass produce, because its workings are both extremely complex and entirely handcrafted. For example, the frame structure that supports the tabletop sections in the Jupe table is comprised of many individual beam structures that are secured together to form the frame. Each of those beams must be individually made and assembled to exacting tolerances in order to ensure that the tabletop sections will move freely and mate in the center of the tabletop to form a substantially contiguous table surface in both the contracted and expanded configurations. The manufacture of such a structure is time-consuming and is not conducive to rapid production. Other aspects of the Jupe table design also make the design difficult to implement. For example, in at least some of the existing examples of functioning Jupe tables, the pivot for the tabletop is a threaded rod that runs the entire length of the table pedestal. That is an extremely difficult and time-consuming configuration to replicate.

Gillows of Lancaster & London

It would be difficult to find an antique furniture enthusiast or collector unfamiliar with the name Gillows of Lancaster and London. The British furniture company — which has earned references in the writings of Jane Austen and elsewhere in literature — is renowned for its exceptional quality craftsmanship, and attracted designers such as Thomas Chippendale, Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite in its heyday.

The firm was founded circa 1730 by Robert Gillow (1704–72), who worked as a joiner, housebuilder and overseas merchant before making furniture for homes and export. Gillow established his business in his home city of Lancaster. However, the company later expanded into London in the 1750s after Robert entered into a partnership with his son, Richard, who apprenticed with a London architect and learned the merchant trade in Barbados. Richard had entrepreneurial aptitude — he managed apprenticeships at the firm, ensured that quality materials were a priority, navigated economic hardships, and designed furniture, too. He created seating based on sketches drawn by his cousin, James Gillow, in London.

London’s wealthy upper class took notice of the Gillows’ high-quality furniture, which came to include bedroom furniture, cabinets, a range of seating and other pieces made of rosewood or rich mahogany imported from the West Indies and Jamaica. By the end of the 18th century, the manufacturer was one of the leading furniture makers in Britain. Gillows designed its own furnishings and worked with significant designers; they had in-house upholsterers and cabinetmakers and employed decorative techniques such as “japanning” in their designs.

Gillows of Lancaster and London became Gillow & Co. in 1813 after selling to Redmayne, Whiteside and Ferguson. The company continued to thrive throughout the Georgian era and into the Victorian period, a time that yielded well-known collaborations with Scottish architect and designer Bruce Talbert on a regular basis. High-brow clients of the manufacturer clamored for their inventive and functional designs for tables and writing desks, many of which incorporated whimsical elements such as secret and pop-up drawers. There was also demand for earlier Gillow designs such as Baroque and Gothic Revival pieces as well as adaptations of Chippendale works.

Despite their success, Gillow & Co. entered into financial hardship during the late 1800s with the advent of mass-produced furniture. By 1903, they merged with Waring of Liverpool to become Waring and Gillows and, in 1980, were taken over by Maple & Co. to become Maple, Waring and Gillow. Today, many Gillows of Lancaster and London pieces are in museums throughout the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.
