Victorian Solid Mahogany Extendable Dining Table by Gillows, Late 19th Century

About the Item

This Victorian table dates from about 1860. It is made of a rich close grain mahogany. This table can appear to be both dark and rich or a warm and golden colour depending on the light. It is raised on 4 brass wheeled cup castors which are fitted to the 4 turned and fluted legs. It has 2 drop folding flaps and a further 2 leaves that can extend the table to various sizes. One of the extending internal bearers is stamped with the makers brand Gillows Lancaster. The table measures approx 46 inches wide by 85 inches when fully extended. The two folding flaps are each 11 and a half inches and the 2 leaves are each 20 inches wide. The table stands 28 and three quarter inches tall and 23 and a half inches to the knee.

    Wear consistent with age and use. The sliding movement would benefit from being waxed so that the mechanism runs more smoothly. Small hidden wooden wedges have been fitted to ensure the flap ends of the table remain level.
