About the Item

A five-piece set of four oak 40/4 stacking chairs and matching table by David Rowland, likely from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Chair with oak veneer over bentwood seat and back on chrome finish steel rod frame. Has a spare yet elegant aesthetic, with an exhaustively researched, exactingly produced, and unexpectedly strong space-saving ergonomic design that remains unsurpassed to this day. Scarce and unusual matching table with ogee edge square oak top on heavy gauge chrome finish steel rod legs. Countless accolades have been rightly bestowed upon the 40/4 chair since its premier in 1964. However, the real star of this show is the table, an already rare piece made all the more so here by an unusual leg design, of which we could find no other examples. Typically with Rowland's tables, a continuous bent steel rod forms all four legs while providing support along all four sides of the top. Here, however, pairs of legs are comprised of two separate bent rod elements, with supports only running along two of the four sides. Most notably, the legs are rotated 90 degrees from their usual orientation, giving them a visually striking and unique twisted paperclip-like appearance. The top has an almost imperceptible warp along the two sides without supports, leading us to surmise that this is an early version of the design, which Rowland subsequently altered to address the issue. Should one be so lucky as to already have or someday acquire a matching table, black plastic bumpers on the underside allow it to be stacked much like the chair. Wear consistent with age and use. Table: Top w/ minor warp; a few rings; faint scratches/tiny marks; 2" stain in grain; paint on one edge. Base is great. Chairs: Wood w/ tiny chip on back; some edge nicks; couple marks on seats; area of stain on two back rests; runner w/ slight bend.
