”Lövåsen” Pine Coffee Table Set in Axel Einar Hjorth-Style by Åby Möbelfabrik

About the Item

This is the Swedish pine coffee table set “Lövåsen” in Axel Einar Hjorth-style, manufactured by Åby Möbelfabrik in the 1930/40s. This stained solid pine set comes with a table and two chairs. The table has a 3.5 centimeter thick, oval shaped top with an underlying shelf and two curved barrel shaped legs. Both legs with two forged iron fittings each. The two chairs comes with cupped seats and concave backrests with a hole shaped handle at the top of the back. Measurements on the table: H 65.5 W 94 D 60 Measurements on the chairs: H back 86 H seat 46 W 44.5 D 50 This furnitures are made in a beautiful Axel Einar Hjorth style at Åby Möbelfabrik how also manufactured some of Axel Einar Hjorth’s furnitures before he in 1927 got employed as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet. I cannot write “attributed to” Axel Einar Hjorth because there are, as far as I know, no reliable sources. Åby Möbelfabrik are known for the excellent craftsmanship and level of quality. Axel Einar Hjorth are known for the design of Nordiska Kompaniets very popular Sport Cabin Furniture-series in pine, Utö and Lovö, which today are sold for high prices at auctions worldwide. At the last picture an aerial photo showing Åby furniture factory in 1936. In 1939, the company had 90 employees. Furniture of very high quality was manufactured. Dining-, bed- and sport cottage furnitures was sold all over Sweden, and also exported to England, America, Finland, Norway, Germany, Denmark and France and other countries over the years. The factory closed down for good in 1976.

Condition:

Wear consistent with age and use. There are some marks at the table top surface, circled in red on the next to last image. The last owner inherited the furniture from his grandmother several decades ago. Since then, they have been put away in a dark storeroom.
