About the Item

This Merrow Associates circular glass table with chrome base comes with 4 chairs with star bases and vinyl seat pads. The table was designed for Merrow, circa 1971, by Merrow’s founder, Richard Young. A former Royal College of Art student, he later studied at the Royal Art Academy Copenhagen under Professor Old Wanscher. Richard was obsessed by quality and the kind of meticulous detailing typical of Scandinavian furniture of the 1950s. He used beautifully finished glossy surfaces – a juxtaposition of wood, steel and glass – as substitutes for patina and marquetry. . Most of the items where produced on a limited run and retailed in high-end furniture stores. They used teak and rosewood and chrome plated steel. with flat surfaces and very specific bolts. The company traded for only 10-15 years. As you’d expect, there is some scratching to the glass but nothing that detracts from the stunning look of the table. One or two of the chairs show the odd crack to the plastic. The cracks don’t move so function and stability are unaffected. It looks like one of them may have been glued (see photo). Don’t be unduly put off though as these signs of use don’t detract from the overall look and this item remains a stunning little dining set.
