About the Item
Designed by Gijs Bakker in the early 1970s for Dutch manufacturer Castelijn, the “Strip” dining set is an iconic expression of radical minimalism and postmodern sculptural form. Comprising a dining table and four matching chairs, the set is made entirely of dark-stained, laminated slats of wood — a construction technique that both names and defines the collection.
The chairs feature a continuous ribbon-like silhouette with curved backs and legs, cut and bent from stacked wooden strips, offering a surprisingly ergonomic and visually unified profile. The rectangular table echoes this sculptural logic, with its signature leg cut-outs and slab-like proportions anchoring the composition.
The set is in good vintage condition, with some visible traces of wear including surface scratches, slight fading, and tonal variation in the wood — all consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and fully functional, it retains its bold visual presence and remains a collectible example of Bakker’s early work.
