About the Item

This is a magnificent vintage dining set comprising a cherrywood dining table by the renowned Norwich cabinet maker Charles Barr and a set of eight dining chairs, dating from the late 20th century. This beautiful table is circular in shape when the leaf is removed, is made of superb cherrywood with flame mahogany crossbanding and has a leaf which can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion, and folds away inside the tabletop when not needed. It stands on a pedestal base, can comfortably seat eight people and is a very impressive table which is sure to contribute to successful dinner parties. The attractive set of eight Regency style dining chair were crafted from the finest flame mahogany. The set comprises six side chairs plus two armchairs. These delightful and eye-catching chairs are made from solid mahogany and tastefully decorated with intricate satinwood crossbanding designs that are accented with a boxwood and ebony line inlay. They have strong yet elegant reeded tapering front legs with sabre back legs. They feature drop in seats that have been upholstered with a rich burgundy and gold fabric. The seat cushions can be removed if required in order to reveal the cane seats beneath which provide cooler and more comfortable dining in the warmer months. Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
