18th Century Single Plank Monastery Table from La Savoie, France

About the Item

This 18th century monastery table comes from La Savoie, which is a mountainous region in southeastern France near the Italian border. The name Savoie is derived from the Latin word, Sabaudia, meaning “forest”. The table was recently acquired from someone in France whose family has been in the Savoyard region for several generations. This antique table has great appeal for several reasons. It has a 2 ½ inch top made from a single plank of French meleze wood, familiar to most as larch (native to this area of France). The tree that was used for production must have been exceptionally large, since the top is one, thick, continuous plank. The wood was probably dried for 25-30 years before it was carved into the rectangular top now seen. Due to the nature of very old single planks, it has developed a bend, which only adds character and speaks to authenticity. The thick top is supported by a pair of trestle legs that screw into the underside of the top. The beam of the H-shaped stretcher runs through the trestle legs. They are pinned in place by large, removeable wooden wedges. The feet are also of a certain interest, with their high shoulders, sloping down gently, almost blending into the floor. This is an incredibly old table with added character due to the natural wear and slight bend to the top. It will seat 6-8 people depending on the chair size and can be used in many style homes. It will be an attribute to any room it is placed in.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and use as seen in photos. There is a bend/warp to the tabletop as seen in photos. Old age splits and scratches. We have applied a coat of French wax to the table.
