About the Item
Rare Space Age 1970s Sphere dining table base only by French Designer Boris Tabacoff (1927-1985) for Mobilier Modulair Moderne. Shown with 44" dia glass top not included. Original glass top was 52" round, had an oval piece of glass when purchased, but had edge damage.
From the previous home of famed Gallerist Ronald Greenberg of the Greenberg Gallery - St.Louis. Sitting on top of the table was a vase by Betty Woodman, in the same room were tables by Giacometti. The home was like a museum, Calder mobile, Basquiat painting, Judd Sculptures, Koons Balloon Dog, Lichtenstein, Motherwell and Warhol Paintings, in fact Warhol visited the home.
In the style of Osvaldo Borsani.
Boris Tabacoff, Bulgaria-France (1927-1985)
Born in 1927 in Bulgaria, Boris Tabacoff is a Bulgarian designer who is one of the artists of the Post-War Paris School (1945-2000).He is the very first designer from this school to create furniture and objects in Plexiglas.
Tabacoff arrived in Paris in the 1950s, he had not yet found his way into the “Post-War School of Paris” as a sculptor or craftsman.
He goes to a renowned sculptor’s workshop, created by the sculptor Philippe Scrive on rue de Seine. Since 1948, Scrive has rehabilitated this unsanitary place in order to house his family, the abstract painter Françoise Staar (1933-2011) and his sculptor friends without a studio. Scrive welcomes up to 22 Post-War sculptor friends from all over the world who share the art of sculpture and the hope of better days.
In 1954, the Algerian War broke out.
Scrive leaves his family and his sculptor disciples distraught and entrusts his workshop to Boris Tabacoff who takes it over in his name.
Boris Tabacoff benefits from the thirty glorious years in France and his workshop creates and manufactures Cardin Design.
It is very present in the art magazines of the 60s/70s thanks to Cardin using plexiglass for the edition of bathtubs, chairs, tables, and Cardin clocks, as well as prestigious plexiglass desks.
Boris Tabacoff died in France in 1985.
