1992 Philippe Starck 'Illusion' Dining Table

About the Item

The Philippe Starck illusion dining table stands as a testament to the designer's hallmark approach to design—innovative, fluid, and infused with a touch of whimsy. Born in 1949 in Paris, Philippe Starck has carved a niche for himself in the world of design with his diverse portfolio, spanning from interior design to household objects, boats, and watches. Educated at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris, Starck's design journey began in 1968 when he established his first company, specializing in inflatable objects. However, it was during the 1970s that he gained recognition for his work in interior design, notably for Parisian nightclubs like La Main Bleue (1976) and Les Bains Douches (1978). Starck's international acclaim soared when he was entrusted with renovating the private apartments in the Élysée Palace (1983–84) for French President François Mitterrand. This led to a string of prestigious commissions, including iconic restaurant interiors such as Café Costes (1984) in Paris, Manin (1985) in Tokyo, Theatron (1985) in Mexico City, and Teatriz (1990) in Madrid. He also left his mark on the hospitality industry with his interior designs for the Royalton and Paramount Hotels (1988 and 1990) in New York City, inspiring hotels worldwide to seek his services. What makes the illusion dining table unique is its marriage of form and function, embodying Starck's penchant for fluid, organic shapes and playful details. Crafted with a blackened metal structure supporting a glass top, the table's design is a visual marvel. The blue glass top, resembling a flowing sheet from the corners, evokes a sense of movement and grace, akin to a tablecloth gently billowing in the wind. In typical Starck fashion, the illusion dining table transcends mere functionality; it becomes a conversation piece, a work of art that enlivens any space it occupies. With each commission, Starck eschews a singular aesthetic in favor of tailoring his designs to the unique needs of his clients. In the illusion dining table, he showcases his mastery in creating objects that are not just utilitarian but also evoke emotion and wonder, inviting users to engage with their environment in new and unexpected ways.

  • "Torquemada" Table in Brushed Oak Designed by Philippe Starck for Driade, 2017
    By Driade, Philippe Starck
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Torquemada" is a table, designed by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Driade, made from solid Sessile oak natural matt lacquered with totally brushed top or with brushed top and handmade carved profile. Binding element of the legs and central beam are in polished stainless steel with mirror finish. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 31.4", W. 82.6", H. 28.7" Although these pieces of design seem apparently imperfect and unique, the collection is composed of a table and a set of seats: a chair, an armchair and a stool. The latter feature two handcuffs in mirror-polished stainless steel, a detail that is as structural as well as decorative and ironically reminiscent of the imagery coming from the ancient Inquisition and its infamous and fearsome prosecutor. A link that regards the concept as well as the project and explains where the name of this collection comes from. Each piece is also available in a more precious version, in gouged oak...
