About the Item

Immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of natural history with our exquisite collection of luxury fossil art. Showcasing breathtaking natural specimens from the legendary Green River Formation in Wyoming, each piece crafted by Green River Fossil Company is a masterpiece meticulously prepared to merge the worlds of natural history and refined artistry. This exquisite fossil table features a Diplomystus dentatus and an abundance of Knightia eocaena. These fish are all 50 million year old fossils, dating back to the Eocene era and a time when Wyoming enjoyed a tropical climate. These ancient fish are forever preserved in a textured matrix of natural, fossil-bearing limestone from our private fossil quarry in Wyoming. The particular layer of stone from which this table was recovered is paleontologically significant as it documents a mass mortality event which occurred in the ancient lake that year; it explains why there is such an abundance of specimens present in one layer. The tabletop measures 5 feet across. It is partially backed in wood and it sits atop an elegantly crafted, custom-made steel base which compliments the fossil color beautifully. The polished edge of the table highlights the gorgeous distinctions between the ancient, fossilized layers of lakebed sediments. DETAILS -Stone tabletop: 60" W x 1.5" D -Tabletop weight: 267 lbs -Table height: approximately 30" -Table base weight: 89 lbs -Includes a Green River Fossil Company Certificate of Authenticity -Fossil content: (1) Diplomystus dentatus (measuring 17"), (22) Knightia eocaena (assorted sizes) ABOUT THE WORK Green River Fossil Company is a world leader in fossil preparation and presentation, specializing in the unique fossil treasures available from the Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA. Fifty million years ago, in southwestern Wyoming, a tropical freshwater lake teemed with life. Turtles, fish, crocodiles, and lush vegetation were all once well-established inhabitants of the region. Today, the lake has transformed into an incredibly rich cache of fossils where the past is forever preserved in layers of natural limestone. This is famously known as the Green River Formation. Professional fossil hunters scout out and excavate fossils from Green River Fossil Company's private quarry; the fossils are then brought to the GRFC lab in northern Utah. Leading experts in fossil preparation perform the painstaking task of revealing the finely preserved details of every specimen. All work adheres to the strict standards of the American Association of Applied Paleontological Science, as is attested to in each work of art's unique Certificate of Authenticity. Green River Fossil Company has supplied exquisite examples of natural art and outstanding specimens to world-class museums, universities, collectors, interior designers, and art lovers. The collection of natural history presented here highlights important one-of-a-kind specimens as well as attainable works of natural art. 500 Million Yrs old Fossil Trilobite
Located in Scorton, GB
The extraordinary fossil Harpes trilobite, measuring eight four millimetres overall, is a wonderfully articulated and fine specimen. Exotic trilobites have influenced some of the most iconic sci-fi films and helped shape the structure of some of the most sophisticated architectural buildings in modern times. The Harpes trilobite, with its unique patterning and streamlined aesthetic, is a species that never fails to intrigue. Its wide, heavily pitted brim, fringe with a curled rim, and elegant taper to the point of both cephalon long spines make it a true enigma. The eyes set back high on the glabella, and the well-defined thoracic segments add to its allure for inquiring minds. With reference once more to the Martian-looking brim, this wide brim with innumerable pitting could have aided the invertebrate lift, much like a hydrofoil. Again, this is the theory at this time. Palaeontologists theorise the possible functions of these anatomical features, either being a wide sieve to filter bottom sediments for food or to detect movement, a sensory organ. Over the 250,000,000-year range of the trilobites, many different morphological adaptions developed from free swimmers to bottom sifters. The expanded and pitted cephalic fringe, a distinct anatomical development seen in harpetids and trinucleids types, including the Harpes trilobite, is a significant area of study in palaeontology. This species, featured in a beautifully designed lucite display case...
