About the Item
Antique English carved oak refectory dining table, circa 1680.
A fine and large oak refectory table from the reign of King Charles II and the restoration of the monarcht after the English Civial War. The planked top sits above a carved skirt the table base with four ring-turned legs and joined on four sides with a substantial stretcher. The table is of joined & pegged construction, the table has a rich mellow patina built up over almost 350 years. The table is robust and stable and will comfortably seat 8-10 people, condition is very good.
Provenance; From a Grand 17th century country House in Sterling, Scotland.

A fabulous antique 19th century monumental Irish pine Country House dining table, circa 1860.
This wonderfiul mid 1800s dining table came from the downstairs servant's kitchen of an 18th century stately home in Donegal, Republic of Ireland. The table has the original painted base & raised on six substantial turned legs, to each side are a pair of drawers with bun shaped pulls, the drawers open & close with ease. At each end of of the table base are a pair of carved corbel brackets, the table has the original pine scrubbed top.
The table top has a mellow honey colored finish and has just lovingly received a coat of wax polish in Bloomsbury's professional workshops, the table base has the original cream colored paint.
The table will comfortably seat 16-18 people, the table has plenty of leg clearance for your tallest guests, this is a rare antique table and had been in the same country estate statley home for over 150 years, think Downton Abbey!

The three-plank cleated detachable top is of superb color, figuring and patination.
Raised on six baluster supports united by stretchers.
The frieze is guilloche-carved on all four sides: this demonstrates that this table can be free-standing. Many of these were only carved on three sides.
This versatile refectory table can be used as a hall table, dining table, serving table, or a wonderful kitchen table. A number of early oak pieces which we have sold have harmonized very well with modern interiors.
A similar-sized refectory table (in generally poor condition) sold for £17,000.00 plus buyer's premium, in Duke's auctioneers ATHELHAMPTON HOUSE sale, Puddletown, Dorset, UK, 9th Oct, 2019.
Nb. The turning of the supports on this antique table indicates a development away from an earlier, heavy, carved bulbous leg, to a simpler baluster leg of the late-seventeenth century. However the guilloche-carved frieze is a hint of an earlier period.
Some historic restoration commensurate with 350 years of use. Overall in superb condition.
