About the Item
A substantial antique French oak monastery / refectory table. circa 1900
Hand carved in France in the early 20th century, likely near the Alps region of Southern France close to the Italian / Swiss border, having an impressive 2.5 inch thick plank tabletop comprised of four boards, rising on a carved and pierced trestle base, cross stretcher with wedged mortise and tenon joinery, resting on sturdy molded shoe feet.

Historically monks used these large tables in dining halls and refectories, hence the name.
A refectory table is a highly elongated table used originally for dining in religious halls and monasteries during Medieval times. In the Late Middle Ages, the table was also used as a banquet or feasting table in castles and other noble residences.
