They were originally designed for the card game loo, which was also known as lanterloo. The name of the game is from the French lenturlu, a meaningless refrain used in lullabies, equivalent to 'lullay, lulloo'. antique tilt top table Lanterloo was a trivial and somewhat disreputable trick-taking game for five or more players.
