Black cherry Trestle Table Inspired by Hancock Shaker and Dom van der Laan
About the Item
This exceptional table, meticulously handcrafted from American cherry and finished with an oil-wax treatment, is a testament to the enduring dialogue between craftsmanship and spiritual significance. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Hancock table, it introduces a unique twist by infusing formal details inspired by Dom van der Laan, the visionary Dutch monk and architect.
The conical shape adorning the vertical beam of the H-structured leg pays homage to van der Laan's formalism, reflecting his attention to proportion and detail. Meanwhile, the slight offset of the joinery subtly references the Shakers' embrace of asymmetry in order to avoid resemblance with human features.
In weaving together these parallel threads of design philosophy, this table becomes more than just a functional piece—it becomes a symbol of reverence for tradition, innovation, and the timeless pursuit of beauty imbued with meaning. As you gather around it, you're not merely experiencing furniture; you're engaging in a conversation that spans generations, honoring the rich heritage of craftsmanship and design philosophy that continues to inspire and resonate today.

frank buschmann
Frank Buschmann (1969-Pinetown, South Africa), artist / craftsman /designer .
Trained as a industrial designer and cabinetmaker. Of German origin, currently living in Galicia, Spain. He spent his childhood in South Africa and Nigeria, his adolescence and education in Germany, where he studied cabinetmaking at the Karlsruhe School of Crafts. In the Netherlands he studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where he has been later teaching in the Master "man and humanity". Frank argues that the mastery of a trade is a carrier of tools exemplary for the sustainability of the future. Being a master of a trade is not reduced to the virtuosity of handling some techniques but also supposes a long learning to recognize and cultivate specific attitudes and values. With this approach, Frank intends to recover and maintain the knowledge and practice, not only of the traditional techniques and processes of cabinetmaking, but also its values: patience, intuition and the search for perfection. The virtuous management of techniques goes through the learning of values and attitudes and, all of them, he considers, are universal tools needed to deal with the complexity of the future.

Rare Dom Hans van der Laan Working Table, Netherlands, 1970
By Dom Hans van der Laan
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A rare working table designed by Dom Hans van der Laan in the Netherlands in the 1970s.
It’s eye-catching, minimalist design is highly recognizable and the Bossche School style that is was designed in, is part of mid-century Dutch design history. The table is made of wood, crafted in a most recognizable style. It has a green laminated wooden top and is finished with copper nails, all adding fantasticly to it’s style!
It comes from a doctor’s practice in the Dutch town Sint-Michielsgestel. The building was designed in the Bossche School style by Vermeulen architect’s office in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. We have the original architect’s drawings...
