About the Item
As one of his country’s most distinguished furniture designers, Bruno Mathsson gained an international reputation for Swedish design, thus his work of over 50 years has become a significant contribution to Sweden’s design history.
Mathsson was an advocate of simplicity, beauty, and elegance in form, which also applied to the furniture he designed, including this table model “Mi 759”. His furniture was innovative in technique as well as design, similarly to his production methods. Deservedly regarded as a master of the functionalist language, Mathsson designed this cleft legged dining table model in 1948. The stained beech structure consists of four tapered and cleft legs connected by a cross stretcher at the top. The elaborate structure supports the circular top that showcases the pattern of the wood beautifully. From a young age, Mathsson was fascinated by the challenge of designing functional furniture combined with high technical quality, and it was the ideas of the functionalist movement that were to inspire him. Infamously, in search of the perfect seating curve he sat in a snow-drift to study the imprint his body had made. Resulting from his extreme care for functionality, his pieces are perfectly measured and crafted with impeccable quality. Mathsson and Eric Ljung from DUX met in the 1950s and began a close and creative partnership in the 1960s. Mathsson devoted much of his time to research and development with an uncompromising commitment to form and function.
Although his designs are from the 30s and 40s, his models like this “Mi 759” dining table are among the classic furniture of our time. Thanks to his uncompromising attitude towards quality, his designs and innovations are now widely acclaimed as timeless modern classics.

About the designer:
Bruno Mathsson (13 January 1907 – 17 August 1988) was a Swedish furniture designer and architect whose ideas aligned with functionalism, modernism, as well as old Swedish crafts tradition.
Mathsson was raised in the town of Värnamo in the Småland region of Sweden, the son of a master cabinetmaker. After a short time of education in school, he started to work in his father's gallery. He soon found a great interest in furniture and especially chairs, their function, and design. In the 1920s and 30s he developed techniques for building bentwood chairs with hemp webbing. The first model, called the “Grasshopper”, was used at Värnamo Hospital from 1931. Edgar Kaufmann Jr., director of the Industrial Design Department at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), collected Mathsson's chairs and included them in several exhibitions in the 1940s. Kaufmann considered Mathsson's importance in furniture design on par with that of Alvar Aalto.
Mathsson was also an accomplished architect; he completed about 100 structures during the 1940s and 50s. He was the first architect in Sweden to build all-glass structures with heated floors. During the 1960s, Bruno Mathsson returned to creating furniture producing a wide range of designs in both wood and steel. Together with the Danish poet and mathematician Piet Hein, he developed the Superellipse table and the Spanleg.
On his return to Sweden from his worldwide travels, the tireless Bruno Mathsson continued designing. He had won such worldwide recognition that on his return to New York to exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in 1978, the New York Times wrote a headline "Bruno is back". During his lifetime he was awarded a number of distinctions including the Gregor Paulssons-statyette (1955), Prince Eugens gold medal (1965), Knight of the Royal Swedish Order of the Wasa (1967), member of The Royal Society of Art, London (1978), and was assigned the title ‘professor’ by the Swedish government (1981).

Bruno Mathsson
As the descendant of four generations of Swedish master cabinetmakers, Bruno Mathsson was born to design furniture. Mathsson was known as a methodical perfectionist who made usefulness the fundamental attribute of his iconic lounge chairs, tables, armchairs and other works, yet he was also a ceaseless experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in form, materials and methods of design.
Like the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, Mathsson was one of the first Scandinavians to embrace undulating, biomorphic forms in furniture. His early pieces such as the Eva and Pernilla series of chairs incorporate dramatically flowing bent beechwood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century design.
Mathsson was also a pioneer of ergonomics — he is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression his body made when he sat in a snow bank — and used supple, accommodating woven webbing for seats. His concern for practicality is shown by pieces such as the Maria table. An elegant design with gate legs and hinged leaves, the table measures more than nine feet long when fully extended, but folds down to just nine inches in thickness.
From the mid-1940s through the 1950s, Mathsson focused on architecture, designing and building houses with insulated, triple-glazed window walls and heated floors — construction that flew in the face of traditional wood-clad Swedish residential design, and consequently met with some skepticism. He returned to furniture in the 1960s, employing an entirely new suite of materials: Stainless-steel framing and mesh seats feature in pieces like the Jetson chair; with the mathematician Piet Hein, Mathsson designed the Super-Elliptical table, which has a laminate top and four-part tubular steel legs that sprout like flower stems from a single base.
Bruno Mathsson’s stylistic flexibility as a designer made him a creator whose pieces meet all tastes and needs.

This “Svensk Fur” or ‘Swedish Pine’ dining table is a nod to modernist design with traditional Swedish craftsmanship. The design relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork.
The Malmvall pieces that appeal to most are the models designed for “Svensk Fur”, for the sheer fact that they seem completely contemporary and undated. The pieces of the line, such as this table, are often compared to the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, even though Malmvall’s designs are exceptional on their own merit. Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This table holds a natural expression with its airy and organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material and the creative use of the tenon and mortise joinery. The rectangular tabletop showcases the solid pine’s pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel. The legs have carved out vertical lines, a smart detail that elongates them optically. Göran Malmvall, the youngest son of Karl Andersson, was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. His expertise can be traced not only in this detail, but also in the legs’ joinery technique.
Swedish modern – despite its name – in many ways transcends the word ‘modern’, and so does Malmvall. Like the style, the Svensk Fur pieces can be incorporated successfully into contemporary and traditional interiors alike, lending themselves to a timeless and universal appeal.

This rare circular table has an amazing construction that praises the firm, Angelini & Delneri. Upon first sight, this model is an elegant circular table made of beautifully grained wood. However, when the table is extended, the elaborate system is revealed by which the extra wooden leaves can be added to extend the length. The artisanal level craftsmanship is as stunning as the design itself, with traditional joinery techniques such as pegs and so-called ‘biscuit’ joints. Besides the extension system, the craftsmanship is also evident in every edge and angle, such as the legs’ curve and the ring strengthening them. This table is very successful at balancing large volumes with clean lines. The legs have rounded edges and are slightly splayed below the wooden ring.
This memorable design is from a designer committed to pushing the boundaries of modernist design in Brazil. The form is functional and elegant with subtle flourishes like intricate wooden details and the evident emphasis on functionality.
