About the Item

This table was a commission to a danish cabinetmaker with the objective of creating a Danish rosewood table made in the same manner as vintage rosewood chairs, namely of solid rosewood using traditional techniques of mortises, tenons and glue. Being made by a traditional cabinetmaker, this table nonetheless is innovative in the following ways. Firstly, made of solid rosewood sourced from Costa Rica by a sustainable forestry plantation owner. Secondly, to avoid adverse (cracks, cupping, etc) movement in the wide wood table top, the aprons at ends of table are made using staves longitudinally rather than transverse, as would be more typical of a table this size. This innovation allows for the table top to expand and contract through the seasons without the risk of cracking because the apron will expand and contract with the top. Thirdly, borrowing from the engineering of a house, this table’s subframe is locked by the table top similar to cladding that locks a house frame. This table can table can take hundreds of kilos of weight with ease. In my 20 years of experience, this is the strongest table I have ever come across. As an antique dealer, I have stood on it to reach things without any concern for damage to the table. It will last centuries if not a millenium. Fourth, the table top is made from 4 inch thick slabs of rosewood, that were split into 2 inch thick lengths, creating a book match on each side of the table top. Unlike veneered bookmatched table tops, each bookmatched side of the table top is not a perfect mirror image because the lengths for this table top was sanded down after being split into two 2 inch thick boards, wearing away the exact mirror image but the shapes and colours to reflect one side to the other. The price of this table reflects the exceptional figure and bookmatched rosewood. We can make other table of solid rosewood table on order for those wanting a different size table. We have rosewood boards 100-400cm in length. Please message with your requirements and we will list your bespoke table on 1stdibs so that you can buy here. Pricing dictated by quality of rosewood. All the tables are made to the best standards in Denmark. CITES certificate available for export.

Danish Cabinetmaker Dining Table - Extendable to 325cm for 12 seats
Located in London, GB
This bespoke dining table was made in the 1950s by a cabinetmaker in Denmark. The modern but classical detailing is reminscent of Ole Wanscher and Kaare Klint. The profiled edges of the table top are in keeping with Kaare Klint's English influences. The curve between the table aprons and legs is more similar to Ole Wanscher's modern interpretation of classical furniture design. The edges of table top are also curved from end to end, softening the oblong shape. Measuring 75cm high, the table is 3cm higher than most midcentury tables and therefore is more in keeping with today's dining chairs with seat heights of 46-47cm. The table is 205cm long when not extended and extends to 265cm and 325cm with one and two leaves, allowing for 8/10/12 seats...

Iconic Danish Midcentury Rosewood Dining Table
By Helge Vestergaard-Jensen, H. Sigh & Søns Møbelfabrik AS
Located in London, GB
This table is 190cm long when extended and 140cm long when butterfly extension leaf is folded under the table top. All surfaces have been lightly sanded to even out any variation in colour between the main halves and the extension leaf. All surfaces have then been re-lacquered to make water resistant. This table has been attributed by some sellers on 1stdibs and some experts to Helge Vestergaard Jensen. I have in my possession both the table documented as designed by Helge Vestergaard Jensen (not for sale in this listing) and, obviously, this table for sale here in this listing. The design and construction are significantly different. I have seen this design with a label from H Sigh and Sonner...
