About the Item

An organic, brutalist construction made of glazed oak wood with four scrolled legs, and an elliptical tabletop: these elements define this outstanding dining table. Technical ingenuity and mastery are indispensable and fuel each other to achieve equally sublime and atmospheric results in The Puydt furniture and this model is no exception. The Brutalist style of design - the term derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” – is characterized by a deliberate plainness and crudity, and emerged in the mid-20th century and gained popularity in the late 1950s and 1960s. As this table demonstrates, Brutalist design extends the functional logic of Modernism, privileging bold and rugged forms and leaving all details undisguised, resulting in an honest and striking look. Instead of heavy ornamentation, this model features expert carvings on the lower structure, including the scrolled feet, robust carved legs and stretcher. The light oak wood creates a sense of lightness, while also projecting an air of strength and solidity. Oak has been the defining material for European brutalist pieces for centuries partly for this exact reason, additionally, oak’s pattern is beloved for its versatility. The large tabletop showcases the unique qualities of the wood, while also providing functional space for the utilitarian function. At the same time, the understated look is also in service of showing off the beautiful lower structure. The expertly carved legs and splayed, scrolled feet make this dining table an accent piece that is sure to stand out thanks to its material and design choices. The precise connecting and adjusting elements only add to the organic impression of this solid wood piece. The brutalist design is perhaps the best way to showcase the elemental beauty of any wood. In the 21st century brutalist furniture design has been making a comeback, making 20th century pieces like this table a rare and valuable piece of the movement. Condition: In good vintage condition.
