About the Item

A late Georgian, second quarter 19th century, mahogany extending dining table. This large table has a solid mahogany top with rounded corners and moulded edge. It extends by way of telescopic bearer stretchers and two additional leaves can be removed and the table reduced in length. The leaves are all fitted with original and high quality flush integral brass clips. The table is supported by George IV type ring turned legs, on elegant and high quality gilt brass castors. High quality throughout. Oak secondary timbers, telescopic stretchers with double runners, gilt hardware. At just over 8 feet in length this table will comfortably seat 10 people. This is a pull-out table, and needs two people to extend it. Unlike the later Victorian dining tables which commonly had a wind out mechanism. A superb table, full of charm with the signs of use, still in very good working condition and well presented. Dimensions: This table measures approximately 73.5 cm (29") tall, 247 cm (96.5") wide fully extended, and 126.25 cm (49.75") wide with no additional leaves, 118.5 cm (46.75") deep. The addition leaves measure 61.25 cm (24") and 59.5 cm (23.5") wide. Condition: Please see the pictures for details of the items condition. - This table is in a good condition, commensurate with its age, is structurally very sound and sturdy with no loose joints. There are some marks and blemishes, and scratches in the top, namely on the end leaves, but all very well wax polished in. Some marks around the legs. Additional leaves are shade darker than the end leaves, but not so much that they look out of place. Both ends of the table have hidden metal brackets to the underside, which are assumed to be later additions, providing further strengthening and support to the table. The table leaf clips and gilt brass castors are all original and full working, if a couple are a little stiff. The polish on the table is good, with no signs of being repolished. The colour is good overall, and has aged/toned very attractively. There is a pleasing overall patina. The tables appearance has signs of use which highlight its character. Presents very well. Sensitively serviced in our workshop where we apply only the most delicate of touches. Our aim is always to preserve originality, and only repair and clean what is necessary. Wax polished and now very much ready for use. - As with all vintage & antique furniture there will be signs of use, marks, wear & tear, etc.

An Extremely Good Quality, Mid-18th Century, George II Period Solid Mahogany Oval Drop Leaf Dining Table, To Seat 8 People, Having Extremely Well Figured Two Flap Top Retaining Exceptional, Rich, Untouched Colour And Patina, Raised On Four Elegant Turned Legs Terminating With Original Pad Feet. Georgian drop leaf dining tables of this design are relatively common to find, however it is rare to find one of this size and in this condition, which retains such a fabulous colour and patina. It is also quite nice to find an oval one, which is not far off being circular when extended. This is a superb example of its type, constructed from what would have been the absolute best solid mahogany available in the mid 18th century and because of that the table is still as fit for purpose as the day it was made. It is particularly solid even with the moving legs fully extended and this allows for great functionality. Of course another tick on the desirability scale for this table is that it can be easily folded down and even pushed against a wall, or into a corner when not in full use, meaning one does not require such a large dining room as may otherwise have been required. The table also retains a fabulous untouched colour and patina and has very clearly not ever been stripped and repolished or anything like that. Seating 8, this table is one of one of the most desirable antique dining table forms available and would work with a whole variety of different dining chairs...
