About the Item

A rare and exceptional custom resin and chrome table by Pierre Giraudon (French, 1923–2012), created in France during the mid-to-late 1960s for C. Frederick Childs, a New York financier known for selling War Bonds and a member of the C.F. Childs banking family of London and Palm Beach. The round top exemplifies Giraudon’s mastery of resin as both scientific experiment and visual art. Created through successive pours of tinted resin, each layer was manipulated while semi-liquid, allowing pigments to drift and fuse into suspended ribbons of color. The result is a dynamic, molten surface — a blend of coral red, amber, and moss green — that feels both geological and otherworldly. The polished chrome cylindrical base provides a refined architectural balance to the fluid organic top. The base shows light wear from use with a marble top, as the original resin top was kept crated for decades while the table was used in a sunny Palm Beach setting. This decision preserved the resin’s exceptional color and clarity, protecting it from UV exposure and heat damage. Giraudon, a Sorbonne-trained biologist, pioneered the creative use of resin in postwar France. His ability to merge organic science with design led to collaborations with Dior, Hermès, Dalí, Arman, and César, and his work was exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the first Triennale of Contemporary Art in Paris. This one-of-a-kind commission reflects the intersection of art, science, and bespoke mid-century design, uniting experimental material craft with storied Palm Beach provenance.
