An Elegant 18th Century Single Walnut Plank Top Dining Table from Spain

About the Item

A beautiful example of a single plank table from Spain, this elegant walnut and oak dining table measures over nine feet long. Hand-carved in the 1700s, the table has been assembled true to the Spanish style: with a collapsible iron stretcher. During the Middle Ages, wars were constantly erupting, causing Spanish nobility to flee their homes quickly. Their tables were designed to disassemble easily for transportation purposes. Another distinct hallmark of Spanish tables from the 18th century is the use of open and splayed lyre legs. When looking at the beautiful oak trestle-like legs from below, wooden dowels can be seen, which were also used to facilitate moving the table in a quick relocation. Interestingly, the sides of the joineries of the legs have been carved with three-quarter circular notches, offering a unique bit of elegance. Meandering from the bottom of the legs to the underside of the table is a pair of iron supports that overlap each other for added stability. Both segments of the stretcher have been embellished with small discs, adding additional personality. Capable of seating up to 10 people, our Spanish single plank dining table has a deep brown patina, accentuated by several coats of French wax.

  • 17th Century Spanish Walnut Wood Table with Single Plank Top
    Located in Dallas, TX
A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher.
