About the Item

An exceptionally large and rare 19th Century solid oak country house / castle dining table of massive proportions by Strahan of Dublin. The moulded top of rectangular form with canted or cut corners raised on finely carved ring turned tapering fluted leg with geometric carving terminating on brass and ceramic casters. This very fine table incorporates eight leaves with a double winding mechanism which enables it to extend and seat up to 24 people. Stamped and labeled by Robert Strahan, Dublin. Provenance: Inch House, Inch, Co. Donegal. Robert Strahan, Dublin, Ireland Founded in 1776 as a cabinet maker, Robert Strahan & Co. grew to become one of Ireland's premiere furniture designers, exhibiting at The Great Industrial Exhibition of 1853 in Dublin. A walnut table, exhibited at the second London International Exhibition of 1862, showcased their talent for both design and manufacture. Bringing together marquetry, scrolling foliage, masks, strap work and cartouches in a piece of some merit; A fine piece displaying the influence of Thomas Hope and Richard Bridgens, it was illustrated in the Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue for the London exhibition. Designing and manufacturing for the Office of Public Works, the firm gained the reputation for high quality furniture and were commissioned to design and manufacture for some of the great Irish country houses such as Doneraile Court, Co. Cork and Lisnavagh, Co. Carlow. The Firm started out trading from 10-11 Chancery Lane. Moving forward 39 years to 1815 and the firm had expanded in to 24-25 Henry Street. In 1845 it expanded further still into 5 Leister Street. In 1870 the firm moved to Abbey Street trading under the family name until 1969. Inch House, Inch, Co. Donegal Inch House in Donegal was built in the early 1700's. The 18th century listed building is located on Inch Island, which is a 13 km square piece of land that lies off the Donegal coast near Burt, at the beginning of the Inishowen peninsula. Inch island was home to Inch Castle, the seat of Cahir Rua O'Dochartaigh. The castle is now in ruins, but on the other side of the island, Inch House still stands proudly today. It is thought the house began its life as an administration centre for the Alexander family, who had a fishing business on the island at the time. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, Lord and Lady Templemore, presided at Inch Castle utilising the property as a hunting lodge until the advent of the Irish Civil War. Following the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922, the country house was used for various commercial purposes. In the mid-1980's, the house was bought by visionary genealogist Pat ‘Inch’ Dougherty and used as the O' Dochartaigh Genealogy Centre. Famous visitors such as Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, came to trace their family roots and history. More recently, Inch House was an Irish Studies Centre for visiting university students. This important country house is noted as the setting of a number of significant historic events including some of the early stages of the Peace Process, as meetings took place on site between politicians and clergy, with distinguished guests including Mr. John Hume. The house was also used as the set for the 2007 film Agnes Jones, that was based on the life of a young nurse from nearby Fahan, who trained with Florence Nightingale.

Substantial 19th century country French provincial farmhouse dining table hand-crafted from solid oak. The table features a monumental 2 inch thick top with breadboard ends. The top is supported by a trestle base having thick, chunky turned legs conjoined by H-shaped stretchers and ending with bun feet. Constructed with mostly wood peg joinery each end has a 10" inch overhang for diners and ample leg room measuring 23.5 inches from the floor to the apron. The rare large size is made in a monastery or refectory style. Very heavy and solid with excellent joinery and craftsmanship. The table top showcases the distinctive woodgrains and has a desirable aged patina on the oak with age cracks and gaps to commensurate its age and use.
