About the Item

A Fine Late Regency Mahogany 7ft Diameter Dining Table, Possibly by William Trotter, the circular top supported on four tapering columns with carved mouldings which stand on an incurving quadripartite platform stretcher base. The base supported on four tapering bun feet with highly distinctive decreasing mouldings and retaining their original castors. The timber throughout being the best quality mahogany of fine figure. This fine and unusual table is of large 7ft diameter making it a particularly desirable, large example of a later regency dining table. The ornament employed throughout, consisting of half reeded or bobbin turned sections, is typical of the work of both Gillows of Lancaster and William Trotter of Edinburgh, with the latter the more likely candidate for this highly unusual piece which makes use of several unusual features such as the combination of an incurved quadripartite platform stretcher with four columnar supports. Perhaps most unusual of all are the four turned and tapering bun feet, the decreasing mouldings creating something of a beehive effect. This style of foot is very uncommon and the table is highly likely to have been the result of a one off commission rather than a repeated design. This fine piece has been handled by two high level antiques dealers previously, Stair and Company and Hyde Park Antiques of New York. This is a distinctive and interesting example of a dining table with that little bit of extra decorative flair. Morgan & Sanders was established in 1800 by Thomas Morgan & Joseph Sanders, both of whom had worked for the cabinetmaker Thomas Butler at 13–14 Catherine Street, London. Initially, they produced campaign furniture, that is, furniture which could be easily knocked down and packed fairly flat, for the use of officers in military service. The Napoleonic War required an ever-expanding British Army and Navy, thus also increasing the demand for all types of campaign furniture, from collapsible beds...
