About the Item
A very heavy and original George I oak drop leaf oval table with a good dark straw colour and rich natural patina dating from c. 1720.
Peg jointed throughout with two gate legs which open outwards from the main frame to support each leaf.
The top comprises seven original boards. Three narrower boards form the table bed and each leaf comprises two substantial well shaped biscuit jointed boards. One of the boards to the bed has shrunk a little over time and a slight gap formed but nothing untoward. This would have shrunk in the first 50 years after the table was made and will not move further. The gap is part of the table’s history and a testament to its great age.
The pretty bulb and ring turned legs are elegant but solid and sturdy. The table height has been increased with the addition of shaped oak feet. This is often the case as people were shorter in the time this table was made and seat heights were lower. The turned feet add about 1.5 inches to the overall height and have been on the table for a very long time. They are sturdy and well blended but could be removed if the original table height suits better.
Old worm holes and depletions, repairs, added elements, knocks and scuffs.
Dimensions are:
56 inches wide with both leaves extended and 21 inches wide when both leaves are down.
The table is 49 inches deep and 29.5 inches high.
