About the Item

American mahogany Cornelius Briggs banquet table with original label. This large table had a patent for its mechanism that allowed the table to extend from 62 1/2" to 120 inches. Made in Boston it is quite a versatile table with only four tapered reeded legs. It has a dropleaf at each end and two wide drop in leaves that go in the middle. When the leaves are dropped and no leaves added it is only 26 1/2" long; once the leaves are raised but no leaves added it is 62 1/2" long; when one leaf is added it is 91 1/2" long and when both leaves are added it is just over 10' long (120 1/4" long). At 53 3/4" wide this needs a good sized dining room to look its best. After almost two centuries this table needed restoration and rejuvenation so we stabilized the extending mechanism by adding skirting that matches the existing skirting to each leaf and refurbished the extending mechanism so it now runs smoothly. The table is now quite robust with no deflection when one rests ones elbows on the table. A labeled Briggs banquet table has just been added to the Museum of Fine Arts collection and is on display there. He is regarded as an American inventor and furniture maker of note. Circa 1845. 53 3/4" wide x 30 1/2" high; with ends dropped it is only 26 1/2" long; with both end leaves elevated 62 1/2"long; with one leaf added 91 1/2" long, with both leaves added 120 1/4" long

Additions or alterations made to the original: We added skirting to each leaf in solid mahogany to increase the robustness of the frame; the added skirting matches the existing skirting and also makes for a visually more pleasing line. There is 24" knee room or more around the table. Repaired: The extending mechanism was cleaned and refurbished so it now runs smoothly. There are a few old minor repairs. It was refinished within the last 25 years. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. The table does not come with chairs; it has three parts including the extending table and two original leaves.
