About the Item

GOTHIC REVIVAL CARVED OAK ALTAR REFECTORY TABLE Probably French, composed of 17th century and later elements Item # 307NLE13P A rather magnificent worn and weathered refrectory table, it was probably designed in the late 19th century by utilizing various old elements to create a powerful statement piece. The columns are perhaps derived from an altar table and the top was added to these. Each altar column is arranged with legs that outstretch in all four directions with the front and back leg mounted by a carved grotesque unique to each corner. Heavy pegged joinery is oversized to lock together the thick oak members. The solid oak top is absolutely gorgeous with a deep worn patina and rich oxidization from centuries of wear, scuffing, scarring and use under layers of waxes - the result is a wonderful overall surface history for the room where that kind of texture is much needed. Measurements: 115 1/4" W x 30 3/8" D x 30" H Condition Report: Composed of 17th and later elements, probably during the late 19th century; heavily worn with significant scarring, loss and wear as expected; much of this has simply become part of the overall patina; small screw holes under the top where modern brackets for leaves used to be attached; top sits on the altar columns with small raised square posts that join into the table top without using any mechanical joinery, the weight alone tightly holding the top agains the altar columns - it is perfectly functional and convenient with that arrangement, but would be safer with screws or bolts to ensure no tipping.
