Oscar Tusquets Table 'Gaulino' Walnut by BD Barcelona

About the Item

Gaulino table designed by Oscar Tusquets manufactured by BD Barcelona Design, circa 2010. Oscar Tusquets, architect, artist and writer has designed nearly everything during hislong career. In particular many chairs, some of them very admired but possibly none of them are as beautiful as the Gaulino. Tusquets explains that in this piece some critic detected his well-known admiration for Salvador Dalí but, when he saw it finished, it seemed to him that the clearest influences came from Antoni Gaudí and Carlo Mollino. This is why it is called Gaulino. He designed it in 1987 and since then it has become a reference in Spanish design. The table was designed in 2011 as a complement of the chair. Material: Structure and legs: solid ash. Tops: walnut. Finishes: edges and undersides are lacquered in black. Dimensions: 120 x 240 x H.74 cm About the designer: Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets Blanca, with the first name written without an accent and accompanied by both his surnames, as he likes it, usually presents himself publicly as an architect by training, a designer by adaptation, a painter by vocation and a writer through the desire to make friends. In other words, the prototype of the complete artist that the specialisation of the modern world has steadily driven to extinction. He graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet and Mireia Riera, with all of whom he set out in 1972 on the adventure of Bd, where he began his work as a designer of furniture and objects, thanks to which he has won the Spanish National Design Award and seen a number of his pieces appear in the collections of such major museums as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. About BD Barcelona: Accompanied with artisanal processes instead of mass production, their products always have more proximity to art than industrial design. Characterised by superior quality, short-series productions (and on occasion limited editions), and unique pieces due to crafted manufacturing. In the 70’s, BD pleasantly surprised by editing Gaudí’s furniture for his famous buildings and in the early 90’s, BD again astounded by introducing an exclusive first collection of furniture and lamps designed by Dalí. Recently the collections and designers with an accentuated artistic profile like Jaime Hayon and Doshi Levien, continue to point the way where design and art meet together. Design meets Art. Since 1972.

Gaulino Stool Red by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona, 1902

Gaulino Stool by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona This stool is, alongside the entire collection, a testament to Oscar Tusquets’ creativity and the influence of Gaulino as a whole. Inspired by Antonio Gaudi and Carlo Mollino, Tusquets created 'Gaulino' in 1987. It was an industrially hand-crafted chair with a contoured wooden frame, slender tapering legs and smooth rich leather. The artisanal chair became a modern icon of 20th-century design. The stool has a concave seat, avoiding the sitter from slouching their back. Its legs are reminiscent of the Gaulino and its backless frame gives the stool a lightness in the home. It can be taken around, tucked under a table or fitted between furnishings. The seat is practical, referential and stylish. It’s the Gaulino again, just in a different light. A number of his pieces appear in renowned museum collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. He has also been honoured with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts), the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Sant Jordi). Since the ‘90s, he has published books on a wide range of design-related topics. About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. They are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine (Nacho Alegre, Omar Sosa, Marco Velardi), Taller Bofill (Pablo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Luna Paiva...
