This extraordinary and prestigious Louis XV style dining or Conference table, made circa 1870, has a one piece top made from a single plank of Redwood almost 14.5 feet long by 4 feet 7 ins wide and 1.5 ins thick, making this table totally unique in the real sense of the word as the few of these wonderful trees that do exist are fiercely protected by law and the Andaman people and to find one capable of producing a single plank of this size in now impossible, The owner of this extraordinary piece will be sure that it is the only one of its kind in the world and can never be reproduced ! ! It is inlaid with a single strip of Coromandel set in 3 ins all around the edge. In our 55 years of wholesale dealing in fine antiques we have never seen the like! The colour and wonderful patination is all original and in excellent condition. This superb piece will seat 16 people with ease. UPDATE . We have been trying to identify exactly where this wonderful wood originated and have received the following from one of the most prestigious wood identification companies in the world AIS of Maryland USA. ( full report available on request ) Andaman Padauk (Pterocarpus dalbergioides/ Fabaceae-Faboideae), is found only in the Andaman Islands; growing in deciduous and semi moist deciduous forests, usually on or near riverbanks. It is also known as Andaman Redwood or Vermillion Redwood (United States). The tree reaches a height of 80 to 120 feet, boles straight and cylindrical, clear to 40 feet; trunk diameters 2 to 4 feet or more above the buttresses. The Andaman Islands were under British control from the 18th Century until 1947 The table was bought by us in 2017 and came from an old priory in England, It is therefore most likely that it was made for a high ranking British official in the mid 19th Century. The colour and superb patination is all original and there has been no restoration. Redwood is considered to be a symbolism of wellness, safety , longevity, wisdom and communication." to walk in a Redwood forest is to enter natures cathedral " Above all the tree, symbolizes vitality and longevity as it can grow for more that 1000 years !
