About the Item

A very fine quality Regency period mahogany twin pillar extending dining table having exceptionally well figured top to tilting ends and original removable leaf raised on turned central columns and elegant four splay scrolling bases with superbly carved decoration. This regency mahogany dining table is of quite exceptional quality. The mahogany used in its construction is the best timber which would have been available on the market to the original cabinet maker at the time and the quality of craftsmanship displayed in the execution of the carved decoration throughout is again superb.  The design is of relative typical form for a twin pillar table in the late 18th, or early 19th centuries, whereby you have two individual end sections, which can then be joined together with, or without the additionally supplied leaf. The leaf on this table is of course original, which again is excellent news. When positioned together in whichever format is preferred the different sections are o course rigidly held together by brass clips, making the table nice and sturdy to eat at.  Another nice feature not often seen is that both ends have tops which can be tipped. Therefore when the table is not in use each end can be pushed away into the corner of a room allowing the table to take up a significant amount less floorspace. This was a particularly important feature for tables supplied to the wealthiest of 18th and 19th century households where an evening of drinking and eating early on, would be followed up by little light entertainment which usually involved dancing, so the table being out of the way meant that a dance floor space was automatically created in that room.  We have had many dining tables over the years and in terms of the ones which will comfortably seat 8, with the possibility even of 10, this is definitely one of the nicest which we have had. We look forward to seeing it go to a good home where no doubt it will get many years of use and end up with a large amount of wonderful stories to tell from evenings involving great entertainment that have been hosted around it. Circa 1835. Measures: Height 28.5in. Length 56.5in (without leaf in place). Length 76.5in (with leaf in place). Depth 50.5in. Regency English Mahogany Antique Extending Dining Table

A fine quality late regency period mahogany extending dining table retaining exceptional colour and patina to well figured top with two original removable leaves raised on elegant turned and fluted legs with superbly carved corner patrae & original brass castors (With a whole plethora of options available in terms of antique dining tables it can be an absolute mine field trying to decide which suits each individual purpose. This particular example is worth considering for a variety of reasons, not least the fantastical overall quality and excellent choice of timber selected. It also retains a good colour and patina. The extending design is of the full out type which is generally seen in the earlier Georgian and Regency versions, the wind out design more commonly seen is generally regarded as a Victorian and later feature. Another advantage of this design is that there is just the 4 corner legs which allow maximum flexibility in terms of chair and human leg...

Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
