About the Item
Extendable and retractable oak dining room table by Henning Kjaernulf.
We also have a set of 6 matching chairs that would work very well with the table.
Henning Kjaernulf (Denmark, 1911 - 1975) is mostly known for his signature "razorblades" motif. His life remains quite a mystery but the beauty of his designs and the quality with which they are executed have known great success. This large solid oak table is beautiful in its simplicity and efficiency. The quality and the grain of the wood are the stars of this beautiful piece. Perfect for a large living room, dining room, or even office, this table will fill up the area without dominating over other design pieces.
You can find the accompanying Henning Kjaernulf dining room chairs in our storefront, as well as other Scandinavian Modern and Mid Century Modern pieces.
When retracted, the table is fully circular with a diameter of 120cm (47 inches).
When extended, the table is oblong with a maximum length of 255 cm (100 inches).
This table can comfortably welcome ten seats when the leafs are extended, and six when retracted.
The table is made of quality solid oak and has a beautiful grain. The four legs are straight, thicker towards the bottom. One extra leg can be deployed from under the middle of the table for additional support when extended.

Danish Modern Borge Morgensen Shaker series Model 5267 Oak Coffee table
By Børge Mogensen
Located in Uccle, BE
Shaker table model 5267 for Danish Furniture makers in Fredericia, Denmark.
Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith to traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials. While peers such as Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen designed some of the most striking and now iconic furnishings of the era, Mogensen focused on making pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable — and in the long run perhaps more useful and better loved. Mogensen studied under and later worked for Kaare Klint, a master cabinetmaker whose chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Klint was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models. So, too, in his way was Mogensen, as two of his best-known earlier pieces attest. His 1945 Spokeback Sofa, with hinged arms that can be lowered to facilitate lounging, is a reinterpretation of the venerable Knole settee. With the oval silhouette of its plywood backrest and waterdrop-shaped cutouts, Mogenson’s Shell chair, designed in 1949, can be seen as a novel take on early 19th century Empire side chairs. Yet Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. His cabinets deploy the same spare geometries and lushly figured woods as those of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his disciple Florence Knoll, the chief difference being that Mies and Knoll used...

Swedish Modern teak/birch long coffe table Bruno Mathsson, 1950's
By Bruno Mathsson
Located in Uccle, BE
From the Annika series. 1950's. Stamped. Patinated wood.
As the descendant of four generations of Swedish master cabinetmakers, Bruno Mathsson was born to design furniture. Mathsson was known as a methodical perfectionist who made usefulness the fundamental attribute of his works, yet he was also a ceaseless experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in form, materials and methods of making.
Like the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, Mathsson was one of the first Scandinavians to embrace undulating, biomorphic forms in furniture. His early pieces such as the Eva and Pernilla series of chairs incorporate dramatically flowing bent beechwood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century design. Mathsson was also a pioneer of ergonomics — he is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression his body made when he sat in a snow bank — and used supple, accommodating woven webbing for seats. His concern for practicality is shown by pieces such as the Maria table. An elegant design with gate legs and hinged leaves, the table measures more than nine feet long when fully extended, but folds down to just nine inches in thickness.
From the mid-1940s through the 1950s, Mathsson focused on architecture, designing and building houses with insulated, triple-glazed window walls...

1960s Scandinavian Modern Danish Solid Teak Round Dining Table
By Hans J. Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Eero Saarinen
Located in Grand Cayman, KY
Very elegant 1960s round dining table Made in Denmark, unusually constructed from solid teak wood (not veneered). Quintessential Scandinavian Modern design: minimal, fine materials, highly practical, clean smooth lines, sturdy construction and timeless aesthetic.
The table has a diameter of 40 in (100 cm) and a single leg, which achieves an uncluttered appearance under the table and buttressing into four feet that rise a low profile parallel to the floor. This leg form in teak bears a striking resemblance to the iconic La Fonda base by Charles Eames, which was cast in Aluminum.
Table height is standard 28.5 in (72 cm).
The leg and feet are also carved from beautiful solid, strait grained teak. The table has been professionally refinished in a hard wax oil which faithfully presents the original look and feel whilst providing contemporary levels of robust protection. The table has only extremely minor signs of wear considering the age and use. This timeless table shows every promise of gracing a kitchen or dining room for another 60 years, and then some.
The contemporaneous cognac leather shell chairs...
