Macassar, a subspecies of ebony, was selected for its straight grain, high striation, and exceptional hardness. The base is pyramidal, with three tapered legs joined by curved lobes. The piece is truly a marvel of nature and human craftsmanship. The high-gloss lacquer finish accentuates the beauty of the wood. Hungarian furniture makers have been making fine veneered furniture since the Biedermeier era in the early 19th Century.
