About the Item

Joseph-André Motte (1925 - 2013) was an interior architect and one of the leading figures of French design in the 1950s and 1960s. At the École des arts appliqués à l'industrie (now ENSAAMA), he studied under René Gabriel, Louis Sognot and Albert Guénot, graduating top of his class in 1948. This was his first collaboration with the Bon Marché art studio. One of his first designs, the Tripodes armchair (1949) in woven beech and rattan, quickly made him famous. In 1954, with Pierre Guariche and Michel Mortier, he founded the Atelier de recherche plastique (ARP) and also joined Groupe 4, created by Georges Charron, René-Jean Caillette, Geneviève Dangles and Alain Richard. During these years, Joseph-André Motte began a collaboration with the famous publisher Steiner. He designed the legendary 740, 770 and 800 armchairs, the A6 armchair and the Bahut enfilade. Timeless pieces of French chic, elegant and refined, revisiting classicism with a modern twist. In the field of decorative arts, he also supplied various models of luxury furniture for the Mobilier National in the 1960s. His brilliant career continued with the commissioning of several large-scale public facilities. Orly Sud airport (1958 - 1961), Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport (1974) and Lyon Satolas airport (1975), Le Havre ferry terminal (1963/1964)... Above all, from 1973 to 1983, he worked with architect Paul Andreu to renovate some 100 Paris metro stations, for which he designed the seat shells that can still be seen today. Together, they proposed a new style, known as Andreu-Motte, dominated by white and featuring the famous beveled tiles. Joseph-André Motte shared this rich experience by teaching at a number of higher education establishments, including the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, Camondo and the École Boulle.

Desk in Oak and Oak Plywood by Marcel Gascoin, 1949
By Marcel Gascoin
Located in PARIS, FR
Desk in oak and oak plywood by Marcel Gascoin, 1949 Marcel Gascoin is the main representative of a French design born after the Second World War, with the reconstruction of destroyed cities. Born in Le Havre in 1907, the young Marcel followed in the footsteps of his father - workshop manager in a practical school, carpentry section - by attending the applied arts section of the École des Beaux-Arts du Havre, then the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. There he met Henri Sauvage who encouraged him to turn to modern furniture. He became a carpenter and cabinetmaker, and from then on he never ceased to adapt the container to the content, as he said himself. Recommended by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1930, he participated in the exhibition of the Union of Modern Artists. Four years later, he participated in a competition for the design of a boat cabin, which allowed him to meet Jean Prouvé, with whom he would work. In 1938, he participated in the Salon des Arts Ménagers and created a line of storage furniture with a particular design that found an echo in Scandinavian countries. In the aftermath of the war, his links with Raoul Dautry and Claudius Petit, ministers in charge of reconstruction, allowed him to play an important role in the production of furniture with a small footprint, by adapting the techniques proven in boat cabins. In 1947, he became commissioner of the International Exhibition of Urbanism and Housing. He coordinated the construction of model apartments (Sotteville-Lès-Rouen) and met the architect Marcel Lods. It was also at this time that Marcel Gascoin and his collaborators saw their ideas prevail by adapting to the greatest number of people, for the mass production of apartments (model of apartment in Le Havre - Architect Auguste Perret...
