As an artist toying with the idea of making furniture, William designed the peri stacking occasional tables in 1993. By 2000, he had created the hal table, which ignited the faceted craze in contemporary furniture design. In 2004, the San Francisco Museum of Modern art commissioned his Nude Descending Table to be sold through the museum store, and when asked to compare European and American design by Metropolis magazine, Ellen Lupton, curator of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, referred to William as the American minimalist. William's New York showroom commissioned the Woodcutter's Lounge to show at the 2011 International Contemporary furniture Fair, where it won a Best of the Year award from Interior Design magazine. His furniture can be seen everywhere, from the campi of Harvard, Penn and Yale, to the lobbies of the Trump Tower and the Ritz-Carlton. As display on the floors of Bergdorf Goodman, Niemann Marcus and Bloomingdales, in advertisements for Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren, and in every major American design publication. William continues to craft each piece, with his crew, in their production facility in the Carolinas. Each piece is made to order, and customization is encouraged.
