Worn Oak Arts & Crafts Antique Breakfast Dining Table circa 1890-1910

About the Item

This wonderfully worn oak breakfast table is a clear product of the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, probably being of English origin. The faded patina in the original surface is most attractive, the finish having more than a century of history rubbed into the top. A sturdy table that was intended for study and work, the piece serves equally well as a unique and interesting breakfast table or office desk. Austere in form, it borrows a touch of the Neoclassical with it’s strong columns over stepped feet and battens, these a near mirror of one another. The top is crafted of several planks of oak with small tongue tenons that assist in joining them; the result is quite stellar, as no seams or separation has developed despite years of shrinking and expanding. This is naturally assisted by the method by which the craftsman joined the top, forgoing the more direct method of screwing the top into the battens and instead using wooden tabs to lock into the grooved framing beneath; this allows the top to float without concern of stress. The legs are locked together with thick hidden tenon-mortise joints, the column through-tenoned into the foot and batten, the medial brace projecting into either column. An interesting and subtle piece, not overwhelming a room but simply lending a touch of aged authenticity and distinct simplicity to the office, library or breakfast nook. Measurements: 53 3/4” W x 40 3/8” D x 29 1/4” H Condition Report: Some veneer patching to leg columns and some losses/chipping as well. Table top is faded and with discoloration, the surface old and probably original.
