About the Item

A Good Quality Mid 19th Century, Victorian Period, Mahogany Baby Pembroke Table, Having Well Figured Drop Flap Rectangular Top, Over Two Frieze Drawers, With Replacement Brass Turned Knobs, Opposed By Two False Drawers To The Reverse, Raised On Turned, Tapering Legs With Original Porcelain Castors. Pembroke tables in their full size form quickly became one of the most popular pieces of furniture around the homes of the mid 18th century onwards, mainly due to their huge versatility and the plethora of different spaces which they can be situated in. In fact George Hepplewhite himself described pembroke tables as the most useful of tables and there are many references to them in 18th and 19th century literature, with Jane Austen herself even describing them being used in various different ways. It is absolutely certain that they are just as incredibly versatile for use in todays world as they were in 18th century england. The ability of being able to use the two flaps to create significant variation with the size of the table top is very much a popular feature. This type of table is actually referred to as a “Baby Pembroke” table and this is due to the fact it is of course smaller in proportion than its full size siblings. These smaller varieties are even more useful than thei rfull size counterparts and can be used pretty much anywhere that one desires around the home. This one, which dates to the middle of the 19th century, is certainly a good practical and functional size and remains in good condition. It is also very sturdy and the drawers operate efficiently meaning that it is very much fit for original purpose. As with all items which we offer for sale this baby pembroke table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. Circa 1850. Height 28in. Width 18.5in. (flaps down). Width 34.5in. (flaps up). Depth 20.5in. Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
